About

MY BACKGROUND Although I consider myself a lifelong learner, my last name can often throw people. I am Dr. Ami Student, a licensed, seasoned clinician with extensive training and experience in the field of psychology. After completing a degree in dance and psychology from Wesleyan University, I performed professionally for a decade as a contemporary dancer. Physical problems compelled me to stop dancing, and I returned to school, obtaining a doctorate in clinical psychology (PsyD) from the PGSP-Stanford University Consortium. My education and training enabled me to develop generalized skills for supporting adults with a wide range of mental health challenges. I also sought out experiences which allowed me to focus on the intersections of physical and mental health. In clinical placements, doctoral internship (Boise VA Medical Center), and postdoctoral fellowship (San Francisco VA Medical Center) I trained in settings where those intersections were prominent. Additionally, I nurtured specific skills in mindfulness-based therapies and providing LGBTQIA+-affirming care. I continued to work for the VA for over eight years before starting my private practice. In addition to my clinical role at the VA, I served as a national consultant for the VA's insomnia training program.  In line with my values of contribution and learning, I also frequently lecture on varied topics, including mindfulness-based treatments for depression and anxiety, chronic pain, chronic illness, health equity, stigma, LGBTQIA+ affirming care, and sleep wellness. MY APPROACH In my private practice I help adults confront a wide range of challenges, such as depression, anxiety, traumatic stress, and ADHD. I also have expertise in assisting individuals struggling with their physical health. As a therapist I value compassion, collaboration, contribution, and genuineness. I show up, remain active, and don’t take this work lightly. With care and understanding, I invite you to “dig in,” make change, and experiment with new ways of living. I use treatments that have strong scientific support (evidence-based practice), but individualize these approaches to meet your personal needs. I am social-justice oriented, and make every effort to be inclusive and equitable in my care. As a member of the queer community I also provide welcoming care for those living romantic, sexual, and gender-diverse lives.  INSURANCE OREGON: I take Oscar Health, United Healthcare, Oxford, Aetna, and Cigna. CALIFORNIA AND IDAHO: I do not take insurance in these states. However, I am happy to provide you the information you will need to seek "out-of-network" reimbursement for our work.
